Melbourne is reportedly confident in luring Essendon banned defender Michael Hibberd to the club, after declaring their interest earlier this season, according to the Herald Sun.

Hibberd has a good working relationship with Demons incoming coach Simon Goodwin and development coach Brendan McCartney after their time at the club a few years ago.

The 26 year old is contracted for the 2017 season, but could request a trade away from the club or worse case scenario for the Bombers, the 84 gamer could head to the AFL grievance tribunal and plead a breach of contract.

The Demons don't have a first round pick this season as they traded that to the Gold Coast Suns last season, while the Demons currently hold pick 27, which the Bombers would be asking for more.
